Arequipa’s spirit has been shaped by earthquakes. The city suffered an 8.4 magnitude earthquake on June 23, 2001. The historic center of the Arequipa was heavily damaged by the earthquake; however, this was not the first earthquake to cause catastrophic damage of the cultural center, with buildings dating to 1540 AD. An example of one building with history impacted by strong earthquakes it the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa, which was the first structure erected in the city. Constructed started on August 15, 1540. The first earthquake to destroy the structure occurred in 1583. The city decided to rebuild the church in 1590 with a new design however earthquakes concurrent with a massive eruption of the Huaynaputina stratovolcano destroyed part of the structure. Another earthquake completely destroyed the remains in 1604. A new cathedral was completed in 1656 and minor damage occurred from earthquakes in 1666, 1668, 1687, and 1784. On August 13, 1868, the building was severely damaged during a violent earthquake. The church enjoyed a period of rest from the earthquakes until 2001. The June 2001 quake cause two towers to collapse in the church. Because of the history of earthquakes, the city has gained the ability to rebound from catastrophes and create beautiful architecture despite the risk.

Arequipa, Peru is in the heart of Colca Valley. Throughout most of the year, this area of then country is similar to the rest. With heavy Aztec influence, mixed with former Spanish customers, there is an eclectic taste towards just about everything. The Spanish based roofing is combined with Aztec styled construction, not to mention almost all of the food is a combination of both. However, during April, there is an event that is something like what you won’t see anywhere else in the country. Holy Week is different here than throughout most of the country, and whether you are religious or not, this is something truly magical and special about the events and festivities that take place in the city.

The entire event begins on Palm Sunday, so although in some months Holy Week might take place in April, there are other times where it may start in a different month. The event continues throughout Easter weekend and is marked by several Aztec like rituals, with the creation of handicrafts, textiles and traditional food. The entire week comes to a conclusion on Easter. Every day during the week there is a different event and activity taking place inside Arequipa, Peru.

The city of Arequipa is located in southern Peru, and in the year 2000, the historical center of the city was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The city was given this designation in part because of the decorative nature displayed in the architecture of the buildings. The architecture represents an exquisite combination of European and native cultural influences.

Arequipa is known as “The White City” because the buildings are constructed of a material called sillar which is a white rock of volcanic origin. One of the most popular tourist attractions for visitors to the city is Santa Catalina Convent which was opened up to the public in 1970. The cloister was built about 400 years ago, and in its heyday it housed about 500 nuns, all of whom were the daughters of wealthy Peruvians. It has been completely restored to its original grandeur and decorated with furniture and paintings that reflect its 16th century origins.

Sightseers in Arequipa also seek out the Plaza de Armas with its palm trees, beautiful gardens and many cafes and restaurants. The cathedral on the Plaza dates back to 1612, and features two elegant towers.

Sitting at 7,625 feet; in the hillsides of Peru is a wonderful place to visit called Arequipa. Many people come to Peru to visit Machu Pichu, but this sity is well worth the stop.

Head South from Lima to Arequipa, the second biggest city in terms of population and industry in Peru. Known as the “White City”, Arequipa is dotted with colonial style buildings and churches, all constructed from a volcanic stone, which is a beautiful pearl white. Adding to the beauty of the city is the weather and surrounding landscapes. The city sits among rolling hills of farmland and green terraces planted with crops. Rising from the outskirts of the city is the Misti volcano, providing a breathtaking backdrop.

Regional cuisine is flavorful and robust. There are many restaurants in the city, as well as shopping destinations like the San Camilo market, crowded with shoppers and tourists looking for the best deals. Several churches are worth visiting as well. The Santa Catalina Monastery is a secret treasure in Arequipa, unknown to many tourists. The monastery was home to a group of nuns that lived in isolation for over 400 years, but now offers private tours to the public.

Once a Spanish colonial stronghold, the city of Arequipa lies in Peru’s Southern Coastal Area, surrounded by high volcanoes whose peaks keep their snow all year. That might be one reason for its nickname, but most natives agree it is the white stone, or “sillar”, quarried from the volcanoes and used in many of Arequipa’s distinguished older buildings, that resulted in the term. Whether by day, under the typical warm sunshine, or under the lights at night, this “ciudad blanca” literally glows. The sight is so stunning, in fact, that UNESCO has named Arequipa one of its worldwide Human Heritage Sites.

Arequipa bustled in centuries past, as immigrants seeking glory and opportunity flocked to the new continent. The area became home to affluent “creoles,” native-born Peruvians of Spanish descent. They erected the magnificent Convento de Santa Catalina, commissioned a bridge by Eiffel, ground their flour at the Sabandia Mill and shopped at the San Camilo Market, both still in use today.

Unlike Machu Picchu and Cuzco to the north, Arequipa hasn’t yet succumbed to the hoopla of mass tourism. Visitors are just beginning to discover this historic and thoroughly walkable city crammed with colonial beauty and charm.
